Past Lives review
7.8 / 10 — CineScope score
Overview
Two childhood friends separated by emigration reunite in New York twenty-four years later, and spend a week deciding what their lives could have been.
The short verdict
A quiet, devastating romance built almost entirely from what its characters do not say.
Story
The plot is a reunion; the drama is timing. Every scene is lit by the in-yun of choices already made.
Direction
Celine Song directs with restraint — long takes, unhurried silences, and a final shot that does more than any monologue could.
Performance
Greta Lee's Nora carries the film's contradictions in her face, and John Magaro quietly refuses to be the obstacle.
Cinematography
Shabier Kirchner frames the three of them like a portrait, so the geometry of who sits where says everything.
Music
A minimal, mostly ambient score that leaves room for the city and the pauses.
Pros and cons
What works
- Beautifully understated writing
- Three superb performances
- An ending you will think about for days
What does not
- Deliberately slow
- Very little happens, by design
Final verdict
The best kind of romance: an adult one, about the life you chose rather than the one you missed.
